Timeline

4 weeks
Problem
2.6 million writers in the world, but no tool built just for them.

Study shows there were approximately, 49,000 writers in the USA [1] and 84,000 writers in the Uk. [2] but were no proper tool to serve them with the required tools to achieve their goal some tools lacks in feature and some tools lacks in user experience and collaboration is the primary concern that lacks in every app available in the market.

Solution

How might we help writers to collaborate and write stories, poems and script writings?

Competitor analysis
The competition lacked features and online community support.

I analyzed 3 popular writing apps and discovered a surprising gap, none truly fostered a sense of community or offered features tailored specifically for writers. This sparked the idea for my solution.

Competitor Microsoft Word
Competitor Google Docs
Competitor Scrivener
User Interview
I interviewed 8 users and gathered feedback using contextual inquiry.

Engaged with users in their natural writing environments to uncover pain points, needs, and opportunities for enhancing their creative process.

Turning insights into opportunities

From the user interview I used an affinity diagram to generate insights which I turned into design opportunities.

Limitations with Existing Writing Tools
Writers need an organized, customizable system to manage components of their writing projects (e.g., plot points, characters) in a way that aligns with creative writing workflows.
Lack of motivastion
Users need a flexible goal-setting feature, such as daily or weekly word counts, milestone tracking, and reminders to encourage productivity.
Experience and Writing Diversity
Writers need customizable tools that adapt to different types of writing, whether for fun or professional purposes, to support their unique creative processes.
Need for Feedback and Collaborative Opportunities
Writers need a space for feedback and collaboration, with easy-to-access options for sharing work and receiving constructive insights from other writers.
Who are the users?
Analyzing the habit of the writers

Exploring the routines, challenges, and motivations of writers to better understand their creative processes and design solutions that meet their needs.

Journey mapping
How do writers write?

Our user journey map allowed us to examine the users' interactions during writing in greater detail. We chose to create a journey map for Jane Thomson. I explored five writing phases to determine users' behaviors and emotions:

STORYBOARDING
Visualizing the writing process

By creating a storyboard, I identified specific writing scenarios for writers. The visual narrative helped me empathize with our users and communicated the context in which our tool might be used.

Wireframes
Here are some of the early concepts I explored.

User Testing
I tested the designs with users and improved the screens that didn’t work.
User testing User testing

Earlier in screen “A,” 5 out of 8 users ignored the prompts and moved to other sections of the explore page, which impacted the click-through rate of the prompt features. One user’s feedback was, “I thought it was some kind of advertisement until you called it out as prompts.” Based on this feedback, I redesigned the page by removing the card-like structure to facilitate lengthier prompts and added more emphasis to the prompts themselves. I also used a lighter background to draw more attention to the prompts.

Result 90% Increased click-through rate.

Reflections
Understanding design as a process
Challenges

Not having enough time for user research. This project only spanned one and half months so it was hard to find our target demographic to interview and have them participate in the usability tests,

Success

This project was the first time I went through an in-depth design process. I was exposed to various user-centered design methods that I can add to my toolbox as a designer.

Impact

Below numbers are just projections, not backed by data.

70%

70% of users could feel more motivated by receiving feedback through the community feature, fostering a supportive ecosystem.

60%

60% might save 20-30% of their time by using WriteUp’s integrated outlining, drafting, and editing features instead of switching between tools.

15%

A theoretical 15% increase in user retention compared to general-purpose writing tools like Google Docs and Microsoft Word.
